Football: Hellenic merge with Chiltonian

From the archive, first published Friday 2nd Jun 2000.

The Complete Music Hellenic League and the Cherry Red Records Chiltonian League are to merge for next season.

After several months of talks between the two leagues, the overwhelming majority of clubs were in favour of the merger, which has been approved by the National League System Committee of the FA.

The format for next season will be a Premier Division fed by a Division 1 West (Cotswold) and a Division 1 East (Chiltonian), thereby retaining the name of the Hellenic League. Oxford-based side Quarry Nomads, who joined the Chiltonian two years ago will now play in Division 1 East.

The Premier Division will continue to feed into the Dr Martens Southern Football League.

A reserve section will operate on a similar basis.

Independent record label, Cherry Red Records, have sponsored the Chiltonian League for the last four years and sister music publishing company Complete Music have sponsored the Hellenic for the past three years.

Iain McNay, managing director of Cherry Red Records and chairman of Complete Music, said: "We understand that it was our common sponsorship that helped to bring the two leagues together, and we are very happy about that as the end result will be a much stronger league."

The new league will be known as the Cherry Red Records Hellenic Football League.
