Street celebrates car-free day

A car free day transformed one busy Oxford street into an outdoor exhibition.

Lord Mayor Gill Sanders said yesterday's (September 22) street party let shoppers and visitors to the city enjoy Broad Street's fine architecture.

Oxford was one of 1,300 towns and cities taking part in European Car Free day. The Broad Street event was organised by Oxford Pedestrians Association and Oxford Friends of the Earth.

Mrs Sanders said: "Broad Street should be free of traffic as it's such a beautiful street and cars merely detract from that.

"I know the traders feel they need some parking, but I'm not entirely convinced."

Corinne Grimley-Evans, of Oxford Pedestrians Association, said: "Broad Street is ideal for this kind of thing, it's the equivalent of a European city piazza."
