A bid for £1m to improve safety and traffic flow in Cowley Road, Oxford, has been approved by the Government.

Oxfordshire County Council, East Oxford Action group and the city council applied for the money earlier this year.

Transport Minister David Jamieson yesterday announced that the bid had been successful.

A 20mph zone may be introduced in Cowley Road in to cut accidents.

Other safety initiatives planned include more street lights, wider pavements and signal-controlled crossings.
