Hold on to our lead with park-and-ride

From the archive, first published Monday 4th Aug 2003.

The Oxfordshire Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically joins the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of park and ride in Oxford.

The city's pioneering role in the history of the system in the UK is one of which we are justifiably proud.

The Oxfordshire chamber is one of eight in the Thames Valley group and many of our colleagues in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire are lobbying their councils for new or vastly improved park-and-ride services.

The recently opened Water Eaton site has a smart new terminal building offering waiting and toilet facilities -- a model for Oxford park-and-ride.

We would like the city and county councils to commit to a short timetable to have these facilities extended to other sites.

We are also urging the councils to introduce a shop or stall to make refreshments available. This could also be a source of information leaflets about Oxford's many places of interest.

And while we're talking improvements, we would very much like to see the unhappy mix of threatening and warning signs you find on arriving at the park-and-ride sites replaced with something more positive about the huge variety of attractions Oxford on offer.
