Cricket: Allaway's ton puts Henley in command

Henley had the better of a draw away to third-placed Radlett in Division 1 on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 244, Radlett were never in the hunt and finished on 163-8, with the eighth-wicket pair batting out the last seven overs .

The 14 points earned enabled Heney to close to within two points of Oxfordshire rivals Banbury and six points behind Oxford.

Former Zimbabwe Test star David Houghton put Henley in to bat and must have regretted his decision as Dave Allaway batted from first ball to last ball for a fine 106 not out. Henley's innings took some time to gain momentum. After Chris Ellison went for 20, disaster struck with the score on 67 as Andy White and Mark Bredell were dismissed in successive balls from Stewart Browne.

Andy Edwards and Darren White who scored 31 joined Allaway to step up the tempo and further support came from skipper Mick Hilditch as Henley closed on 243-8.

Spinners Chris Ellison and Andy Edwards opened the Henley attack and Edwards soon bowled Nick Fielden.

Paceman Waqar Ahmed then joined the attack, taking a wicket in his first and third overs.

Bredell, having his first real bowl for some weeks following his hamstring injury, then had Graham Dill caught behind before Steve Lowe and Haydn Smith put on a stand of 41.

Two more quick wickets gave Henley a scent of victory but Houghton and Gary Burchett steered Radlett to safety on 163-8
