Ideas sprout for 'story tree'

Characters from the books of two of Oxford's most famous authors could be sculpted into a wind-damaged tree.

Figures from the works of JRR Tolkien, who wrote The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and CS Lewis, who is best known for The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, could feature in the "story tree" at Bury Knowle Park, Headington. A model of the proposed sculpture is set to be unveiled at Headington Hill Hall, Oxford, on Friday, October 15.

Mary Hope, of Headington Committee for Development Action (HCDA), which commissioned the model, said: "Boward Tree Surgery of Long Hanborough came up with the idea of turning it into a story tree, because Headington Library is in Bury Knowle Park.

"With the parts of the tree that have been removed, we would like to make benches to go round it, so it can be used as a story-telling place."

The group aims to display the model at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington's Co-op supermarket and the library.
