Students go on safety march

Students at Oxford Brookes University are organising a candle-lit march down a dark lane in Oxford tonight (Thursday, November 25) to highlight violence against women.

The march, held to coincide with the UN Day for the elimination of violence against women, will start from the university's Headington campus at 7.30pm, before proceeding down Pullens Lane.

The students are campaigning for better lighting and security in streets surrounding the university campus. Amy Thomson, Oxford Brookes Students' Union Womens' Officer and campaign organiser, said the walk was intended to highlight safety for men too.

She said: "We don't feel comfortable walking down Pullens Lane at night.

"This is a big problem because Pullens Lane is a major thoroughfare for students as numerous halls of residence are located in the surrounding area."
