Rugby: Brown's effort seals historic Chinnor win

South West 1: Chinnor made history with a 15-8 victory at Penryn.

This was their first ever victory in Cornwall and kept alive their 100 per cent record.

Playing into a strong first-half wind on a heavy pitch, it was never going to be easy.

But Chinnor dominated the early exchanges with a succession of driving mauls and incisive back running.

Flankers Ed Rixon and Jon Brooks were held up only feet from the Penryn line, but they had only a Richard Williams penalty to show for their efforts.

Penryn hit back with a penalty from Stick and piled on the pressure until the break.

Chinnor kicked possession away too easily after the restart and Penryn's Chris Cole scored from a driving maul.

The visitors remained confident and a ferocious double tackle from Darren Oxley and Rewi Tollich saw Williams hack on and convert his try.

Eric Brown broke through a maze of defenders to seal Chinnor's victory with a fine solo try.

Flanker Phil Vinter saw red as Oxford Harlequins' miserable run continued with a 17-0 loss at Chippenham.

Vinter was sent off for persistent off-side on 35 minutes, just ten minutes after returning from a sin-binning for the same offence.

By that time, Chippenham were already 5-0 up and this became 10-0 at half-time with a second try.

In the second half, 14-man Quins rang the changes.

Mark Dixon came on for Charlie Mason, and Ben Cottenden for the injured wing Charlie Murphy.

This seemed to generate more purpose and Quins started winning much more ball.

They came close when scrum half Anthony Cope and fly half Owen Gustaffson created chances for make-shift locks Mark Dixon and Jamie Cope, and hooker Simon Chadbone.

A Chippenham flanker was yellow-carded for persistent off-side on 61 minutes, but they soon surged further ahead with a converted try.

Chippenham went down to 14 men again when their loose-head prop was sin-binned for dissent, but Quins could not get off the mark despite a strong finish.
