Sir, Christopher Gray doesn't have to go as far as the Guardian and Nescafe to find howlers (Gray Matter, April 28). Seen on dozens of signs put up across Oxford's park-and-ride car parks: "Overstaying will be enforced". Funny, I would have thought they'd want to discourage the practice of leaving your vehicle there for days on end, never mind enforcing it; and indeed, elsewhere they specify a 48-hour limit. At any rate, despite talking big, so far they have failed to enforce any overstaying in my own case. more...

Sir, Once FOXCAN and the supporters of this scheme have received permission from the owners of the site, let them commission from consulting engineers a detailed structural and landscape survey of the entire area, and from it produce a fully-costed plan. Obtain firm commitments from the allegedly interested retail and other partners on whose funding they are banking, and the size of premises and terracing they would require. Assess whether the resulting 'turning basin' would be large enough to turn canal boats, and how much of it would be visible except from the surrounding buildings. more...
Sir, Oxford certainly deserves a memorial to its Catholic martyrs. Your readers may not be aware of how many of these there were. Thomas Belson (Exeter College), George Nichols (priest, Brasenose College), Humphrey Pritchard and Richard Yaxley (priest) were hanged in the Town Ditch, which is the site of the current Broad Street, just outside the town walls on July 5, 1589. The two priests were also drawn and quartered. Ironically, the Protestant memorial is just a few yards from the location of the Catherine Wheel Inn, where these Catholic martyrs were arrested, on what is now the site of Balliol College. more...

Sir, Like Christopher Gray, I too remember The Boot pub in Stonesfield (Weekend, March 3). Of course, there was always The Black Head, and The White Horse came and went. We read often of the changing face of the English village; that many are no more than satellites to the city, part of the commuter belt, or little more than a holiday retreat. The evidence for this is perhaps never more apparent than in the pub. more...
Sir, Thames Water seem to have got away again very lightly, with their regular annual warning about the shortage of water, underlined this time by a hosepipe ban. A recent article in The Investors Chronicle quoting figures from Ofwat, the water regulator, pointed out that 33 per cent, one third of all the Thames Water supply, leaks away in transit, it just never gets there. Some leakage is inevitable, but this is a leakage rate which is 50 per cent worse than, twice as bad as, the average in this country for the rest of the water industry. more...

It was a brave decision by Schola Cantorum to use its own choir members for the solo parts in Handel's Israel in Egypt, rather than engage the services of professional soloists. But was it a wise decision? Was this, I wonder, why the Sheldonian was barely half full on Saturday night, or was it simply that potential audience members were too preoccupied with forthcoming May Day revels? Whatever the reason, this was not, for me, one of Schola's best performances. It was technically assured, as always, and there was the usual fastidious attention to intonation, dynamics and interpretation. There were moments of great energy, too, with plenty of attack and some good, crisp entries. But somehow it seemed to lack their customary sparkle. more...
The final concert in the Oxford Chamber Music Society's season was a homecoming for at least one of the performers. Harpist Helen Radice (pictured) is an Oxford graduate, who went on to the Royal College of Music and has since won several prizes and become internationally renowned. Her colleague Florica Grigoras, who also attended the RCM, is no less distinguished; she has been playing the violin since the age of seven, and has collected numerous prizes and scholarships along the way. The duo's pedigree shone through in Sunday's varied programme, along with their natural rapport, virtuosity and technical excellence. more...

BUTCH THOMAS: THE SPIN. more...
Given time and enough practice, it is not so hard to play loud and fast on a tenor sax, and since Parker and Coltrane it is something players have aspired to and audiences have applauded. But, then, loud and fast is not enough. The music has to have some form and meaning to give the listener something to hold on to. Butch Thomas, an American saxophonist renowned for his work with Jaco Pastorius and now resident in Britain, absorbed this lesson early in his career. He showed at the Spin how wonderfully he can play with volume when needed, speed when appropriate and meaning at all times. more...
Under its present leader, Edward Higginbottom, New College Choir has gained an international reputation, performing in Europe and beyond several times a year. It was created 600 years ago in order to provide a sung liturgy in one of Oxford's finest chapels, and the best place to hear this remarkable choir remains their own home, where they perform from the choir stalls midway down the nave. This allows the listener to hear the two parts of the choir coming from either side, enhancing the effect of a chapel reverberating with sound. more...

It was Britain's second exhibition devoted exclusively to the work of Vincent van Gogh and it took place in Oxford. Yet, curiously, very little is know about the Oxford Arts Club show, held between May 7 and June 2, 1924, at Barnett House, on the corner of Broad Street and the Turl. Ironically, this became the site years later (following rebuilding) of Blackwell's Art Shop, where some of the very pictures that had been displayed unknown and probably unappreciated at the time are now offered in various publications as iconic images of 20th-century art.
Gourmets gathered in great numbers in Henley last weekend for a two-day festival of food the town's first. The glorious sunshine, coupled with the opportunity for so much eating and drinking, attracted thousands to the town, all of whom appeared to have congregated, when I arrived on Saturday, in the giant marquee covering most of the Market Square. Not so for there were almost as many visitors waiting their turn at the produce stalls farther along the street (what wonderful bagged salad leaves I bought from Green Bean!), and a long line of people queuing beside the Town Hall for the 1pm talk being given, as it was billed, by "Roy Ackerman and friends".

But somehow it seemed to lack their customary sparkle. more...
