Kenneth Branagh's The Magic Flute and other new releases

With all the fuss over Sleuth last week, it would be easy to overlook the fact that Kenneth Branagh has a another feature on release today. Indeed, the man once hailed as the finest actor of his generation is rapidly becoming known primarily for his work behind the camera. But The Magic Flute concludes a rather sorry trilogy of misfiring remakes that began earlier in the year with As You Like It. With a screenplay by Stephen Fry, this relocation of Mozart's 1791 opera to the Great War is the best of the bunch. But, unfortunately, this is rather faint praise.  more...

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

If Brad Pitt (pictured) lassos his first ever Oscar nomination as Best Actor in a Leading Role for his portrayal of the eponymous outlaw in Andrew Dominik's handsome new Jesse James biopic, it will be at the expense of an even better performance in the cumbersomely titled The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Co-star Casey Affleck, as Ford, blows Pitt off screen with a performance of such intensity that it takes your breath away.  more...

Gray Matter

Last pint in a pub I shall miss

hough I have never considered myself a lager lout, I was for more than 30 years a big fan of lager, and especially of Stella Artois. That I became a very big fan - like around 17 stone - was one reason I gave up drinking it more than two years ago.  more...

Beat the wife with the help of the Daily Mail

Is the Daily Mail encouraging its readers to beat their wives? Unlikely as this might seem, the evidence would suggest that it is. Earlier in the month it carried a two-page feature in which was spelt out the central position in the binge-drinking culture played by Stella Artois lager. So well known had it become as a provoker of violence, wrote Victoria Moore, that many referred to it as the "wife beater". She added: "For those familiar with its reputation, the idea of asking for 'a pint of Stella please, mate' is rapidly becoming about as appealing as the idea of ordering the down-and-outs' favourite, a pint of Special Brew."  more...

Robert Plant shines on new CD

After his storming appearance at the Cornbury Festival 18 months ago, Robert Plant went strangely quiet, with UK activities just about limited to a show in the Brecon Beacons. The Childhood of Christ: Oxford Town Hall

It's amazing to think that Berlioz's moving L'Enfance du Christ (The Childhood of Christ) began life as a party joke. Signing it with a false name, Berlioz produced what is now the most famous number in the work, The Shepherd's Farewell. Eventually, he was encouraged to expand the work into a cantata, The Flight Into Egypt, which was later expanded further into the three-part oratorio we know today. The Oxford Harmonic Society tackled the work with its customary aplomb last Saturday night, conducted by the ever-buoyant Robert Secret.  more...

London Jazz Festival

For a long week this month, innumerable venues in London became part of the London Jazz Festival. The festival gets sufficient sponsorship to allow for an extraordinarily wide spectrum of music from jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, through to adventures in multimedia sound such as Orphy Robinson's Arts Council Commission, Routes Through Roots and free gigs such as Barry Green and veteran bassist Dave Green at Ray's Jazz in Foyles.  more...

Zoe Rahman at the Carswell Country Club

One of jazz's great pleasures is to listen to a group that has worked together long enough to have built up an understanding but not so long that routine has started to solidify their responses. Pianist Zoe Rahman, who has a burgeoning reputation as both player and composer, has been working with Oly Hazelhurst, on bass, and American Gene Calderazzo, on drums, for several years, so the trio has built up a strong empathy. The result is playing that is not just tight and aware but music that has unexpected depth and warmth.  more...

Status Quo, The New Theatre

When Status Quo started their tour earlier this month, a reviewer from a national newspaper was sent to the gig: "The joke has worn thin as plod rockers opt for autopilot." Either he saw the wrong band, or something had changed by their two-night residence (both sold out) in Oxford on Wednesday and Thursday last week. The New Theatre was alive with Francis Rossi look-alikes, T-shirts shrieking out "Are We Rockin' Yet?" and men and women of a certain age saying "Oh, hello, how are we?" to each other.  more...

On The Box

Much To Ponder in Gritty Drama

Another week, another gritty northern drama. Adapted from a novel by Jonathan Trigell, Boy A (Channel 4) is set in Manchester, where many gritty dramas take place, although this one gets away from some of the stereotypes. It concerns a boy named Jack who has spent his adolescence in prison and is now trying to make a life for himself in the strange outside world. We gradually discover that he was in prison for abetting a friend in murdering a young girl. The story has obvious similarities to the James Bulger case, but it sets out the dilemmas of freeing such young offenders back into the community. Jack has been reformed, yet the tabloid newspapers still try to track him down and ruin his life.  more...

Restaurants

Chez Gérard, George Street, Oxford

We Oxford oldies still remember these George Street premises as the Army surplus stores, though they have been occupied for more than ten years since by a link of the Caffé Uno 'Italian' restaurant chain. Now owners Paramount Restaurants have turned the place into an outpost of their French-style Brasserie Chez Gérard. This metaphorical crossing of the Alps has perhaps been performed in response to fierce competition in Oxford's corner of pseudo-Italy, where Ask, Zizzi and Bella Italia all vie for custom within a hundred yards or so of each other. But then I see from a quick web search that Paramount appears to be making the switch in other parts of the country too . . .  more...

Rapunzel: The Theatre, Chipping Norton

Fancy a dose of alternative medicine? If so, The Theatre, Chipping Norton, is serving up an alternative to the usual Christmas panto. This year's show tells the story of Rapunzel, a magic plant that first surfaced 400 years ago, and was later the subject of a Grimms' fairy tale. Now the Rapunzel plant comes bang up to date as a herbal pick-me-up. Gorman's wife is expecting a baby, and has a strong craving for the plant, which she can see growing next door. Gorman (Stuart Slavicky) steals a leaf or two for her, but is promptly caught by owner Malignia, an evil sorceress. "Take the Rapunzel, but your wife will pay for it with her life," Malignia cackles, adding ominously: "You will suffer sorely; you'll become a creepy-crawly."  more...

Tales from the Brothers Grimm, Creation Theatre Company, BMW Plant, Cowley

'Once upon a time there was a wood," announces a storyteller at the beginning of Creation Theatre's Tales from the Brothers Grimm. Ominously, he continues: "Nobody knew who lived there. It was no ordinary wood." It's not long before Hansel and Gretel warn Little Red Riding Hood of the dangers that lurk among the trees.  more...

Horrible Histories, New Theatre

Each time the Birmingham Stage Company adapt one of Terry Deary's "Horrible Histories" books for the theatre they set themselves a formidable challenge. There is huge expectation; the series is revered by both children and parents nationwide. Even more problematically, the subgenre of 'potted history' is tricky to get to work well on stage. However, with The Awful Egyptians, the company have outdone themselves, and not one of the 100 or so minutes the show occupies is superfluous, or, indeed, less than thoroughly enjoyable.  more...
