Cinema

As Relevant as Ever 40 years on

There are a couple of intriguing new releases on offer this week. But neither can match the power and provocation of The Battle of Algiers (1966). On The Box

Nothing new in bad behaviour

Bad behaviour has been all over television this week. Maxwell (BBC2) was a dramatisation of the final stages in the life of Robert Maxwell, the wheeler-dealer who was not only a crook, a liar and a charlatan but also extremely vulgar and vain. David Suchet's portrayal caught all these facets of the man but it was a brilliant performance in an unsatisfactory drama. Writer Craig Warner jumped into the story without filling in the background, some of which was only sketched halfway through the programme. The bitty scenes failed to cohere into a comprehensive picture. Pensioners who were robbed by Maxwell probably know more about the man than this play conveyed. Somehow I feel I know more about Cap'n Bob, although I only encountered him once - when I saw him at a village dance where, as the local Labour MP, he handed out the raffle prizes with much false bonhomie.  more...
