Art

David Tress: The Brian Sinfield Gallery, Burford

Fierce Vision is a fitting title for this impressive show, by the artist David Tress, at the Brian Sinfield Gallery in Burford. The ferocity is in the making: the vision is of raw beauty. Paint is applied to paper with an energy and passion that almost destroys it. The violence of his techniques in mixed media matches his vision of the awesome power of nature. Whether he is painting snow showers, rainbows, the dawn, waves crashing on rocks or heat over stubble fields it is expressed with a tactile empathy. His images of churches, from Malmesbury Abbey (pictured) to Llanwnda, remind me of the atmospheric works of John Piper.  more...

The Hidden Art of Charlbury

If you venture through a secret door into a walled arbour you will discover three very different and talented artists in an old barn. Inspired by her collections of china, bags, belts and boxes, and her garden, Sue Rangeley's delicate botanic watercolours and crayon studies of hellebores and dahlias have led, in turn, to her bejewelled, embroidered textiles (right) like the organza skirt appliquéd with dahlias and decorated with fine beading. Her florets and her Art Deco bags with stylised leaves and flowers are stunning and technically perfect like her vase-shaped guilded bag with fabric leaves that flow from the base to a bouquet of ruched roses. See, too, her gray silk organza cape encircled with metallic organza roses - a "touch of fantasy and romance" for bridal or elegant evening wear.  more...

Cinema

Wedding Daze

In keeping with tradition, Michael Ian Black's romantic comedy Wedding Daze offers something old (most of the gags), something new (the romantic pairing of Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher), something borrowed (larger-than-life supporting characters defined by their tics or sexual peccadilloes) and something blue (sporadic gross-out humour).  more...

Water, Ten Canoes and The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros

Having confronted sexual bigotry in Fire (1996) and religious sectarianism in Earth (1999), Deepa Mehta set out to complete her 'elements trilogy' with Water in 2000. But she was forced to abandon the project after groups linked to the Hindu fundamentalist Bharathiya Janatha Party succeeded in destroying the sets in Uttar Pradesh, convinced that they were preventing an insult to Indian womanhood by denouncing the sacred Manu doctrine that a widow should either join her husband on his funeral pyre, marry his younger brother or subject herself to a life of isolation and penury.  more...

Gray Matter

A pub landlord of a very special kind

The Half Moon in St Clements was certainly Oxford's smallest pub up until the 1980s. It probably still is today, despite expansion into what had been union offices next door. The picture above, taken in 1981, shows about half the 'trading area'. This is not an expression, I assure you, that would have passed the lips of landlord John Leaves, the man in the centre of the photograph, who was ever contemptuous of the jargon and conventional practices of business life.  more...

Music

Music from the Movies, Sheldonian Theatre

This was the first concert I'd been to where the players actually wore the programme. Last Saturday the Oxford Chamber Orchestra offered several Caribbean pirates (one with parrot), a jaunty Robin Hood, a Hogwarts prefect with a genuine Gryffindor tie (acquired via the internet, today's equivalent of an ethereal delivery). Then, just before we began, there was an irruption of Batpersons who chased round the theatre a few times then settled at the back among the extensive percussion section, where they were very fully employed all evening, sharing the bangers, crashers and tinklers very amicably between them.  more...

Carlos Lopez-Real: The Spin, Oxford

The organisers of the Spin Jazz Club, Pete Oxley and Mark Doffman, have been in the business long enough to avoid clumsy mistakes in their programming. This is born out by the fact that the club was short-listed for the second time in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards this year. Consequently, there is no reason to fear that, because the guest soloist on a particular week is relatively unknown, the evening will not be as enjoyable as with the crowd-puller from the week before. In fact the opposite is more likely to be the case.  more...

Nostalgic look at children's TV

This week has been Children's TV Week, although you may not have noticed because the BBC has made little fanfare about it and tucked the programmes away on BBC4 so that they are inaccessible to many viewers. Yet it's an important subject, as children's television is under threat. ITV has closed its children's TV department and the BBC has announced that it will cater only for the under-11s. The BBC's tradition of Saturday-morning programmes for children has been replaced by wall-to-wall cookery.  more...

Dud & Pete: Come Again

The warm-up scene of Dud & Pete: Come Again, a tribute to fondly-remembered comedians Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, was promising, setting up a TV set with actors, radio engineers and whatnot wandering about measuring angles, adjusting furniture, vaguely dusting a grand piano. Sadly, that's about as good as it got. We were to witness the Tony Ferguson Show, introduced by the man himself (Alexander Kirk) in a desperate Archie Rice-type attempt to get us interested and applauding before launching into an interview with Moore.  more...

Six Characters Looking for an Author: Oxford Playhouse

Pirandello's play was booed off the stage as the work of a madman at its premiere in Rome in 1921. Today, his use of the play as metaphor, the distinction, if any, between the real and the assumed self, the mask and the face, the persona and the person, not to mention the unmentionable - the backstories and revelations - have become familiar theatrical ground. So, too, have his once-daring stage tricks - the curtainless perspective through to the bare back wall, the exits and entrances via the auditorium, the visibly moved props and scenery.  more...
